Rejecting God As King: Keeping Up With The Middianites  Part III

By: Timothy E. Davis

"Then Samuel said to all the people, 'This is the man the Lord has chosen as your king.  There isn't his equal in all of Israel!'  And all the people shouted 'Long live the king!' "

 I Samuel 10:24 (TLB)

Although Samuel followed God's instructions, (in Part II) , and told them how much authority the king would have over their lives, families, and property, the people of Israel still demanded their own king.  Why they did this is not fully understood, because God Himself had been their King since He led them out of captivity in Egypt.  In what might be the earliest known case of "all the other parents let their kids have kings",  God, although He was clearly hurt that His people were, in a sense, "firing Him",  He found his choice for king in the least important family in the smallest tribe.

It is always true, that we judge people on their appearances , but God judges by looking into their heart.  Like the king who would one day replace him, he told Samuel he had the wrong man.  But, just like with David, God knew exactly what He was doing.  The next day he was anointed by Samuel, and Israel had the king they wanted.
