Singing Helps Chase Away the Fears
By: Timothy E. Davis
"Then He took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it, and gave it to them and they all drank from it. And He said to them,' this is my blood., poured out for many, sealing the new agreement between God and Man. I solemnly declare that I will never again taste wine until the day I drink from a different kind in the Kingdom of God. Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives.' " Mark 14:23-26 (TLB)
Jesus knows it is time. He feels the burden on His shoulders, and knows it will soon get worse, almost unbearable. No man in History has ever faced a more excruciating assignment. But this man was born to die, and the burden he shoulders belongs to me, and you. Our Messiah truly carries the weight of the sins of every man, women, and child, those born, those who died, and even those not yet born.
Jesus was carrying the collected weight and shame of every act of murder, rape, curse, slander, adultery, cruelty, lying, thievery, idol worship, and blasphemy that ever happened and ever would happen. The burden of shame He felt was almost unbearable.
He needed something to take his mind away, for a few minutes at least, from the crushing hate and shame. So the Teacher and His students sang a hymn to praise the Father. That is some excellent advice for us, too. When we praise the Father, we turn fear into trust, and drive away the troubles in our hearts, at least for a little while. So next time you feel the battles of life bending your back, Sing o Sing of Our Redeemer.
